Your views on open access publishing are needed!

The SOAP Project is currently conducting an online survey to assess researchers’ experiences with open access publishing. This survey aims to inform the most comprehensive analysis of attitudes to open access publishing to date and is seeking views from a wide a range of interested parties. It is primarily aimed at active researchers in public and private organizations, from all fields of the research in the sciences and humanities and focuses on publication of research articles in (open access) peer-reviewed journals.

The survey outcome will be made public and the resulting insights as well as recommendations will be openly shared with the European Commission, publishers, research funding agencies, libraries and researchers.

2nd Conference on OA Publishing

Following up on their presence at last year’s first OA Publishing conference, members of the SOAP consortium will present results from the SOAP project at the second conference on Open Access Publishing in Prague, which is organized by the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association.

A presentation on the first results of the SOAP project will be given at the 14th International Conference on Electronic Publishing “ELPUB 2010 – Publishing in the networked world: transforming the nature of communication”. The next follow-up conference on the Berlin Declaration “Berlin 7 – Reaching Diverse Communities” will focus with a panel discussion on “From Subscription to Publication: Scenarios for a Transformation of Scholarly Communication”. A presentation on the SOAP project will be given as a short introduction. The presentation will be given in English.

1st Conference on OA Publishing

In the FP7 Science in Society call in 2008, besides SOAP two other projects on the topic of access to scientific information have been selected for funding:

NECOBELAC: Network of collaboration between Europe and Latin American Caribbean countries
This project aims to improve the production and dissemination of scientific information in public health by establishing a network of collaboration to spread knowledge on the methods of scientific writing and publishing and on appropriate tools for the open access dissemination of information for the protection of public health.

EUROCANCERCOMS: Establishing an efficient network for cancer communication in Europe
This project looks at the issues surrounding communication and dissemination of cancer information across Europe and aims to to establish a single, efficient network for cancer communication in Europe, a “one stop shop” for people involved in cancer: professionals, patients, politicians, industry – everyone by using IT solutions which already exist to coordinate information which is already available.

CREST Questionnaire on Scientific Information

In June 2009, the European Commission published the results of the CREST members’ questionnaire survey on scientific information in the digital age. The SOAP project is mentioned as one of the initiatives undertaken to explore the risks and opportunities of the transition to full open access publishing.
